Trees turning into vivid colors, that’s autumn. If you’re in Japan during this time, be sure to see the fall leaves. Here are some famous spots for autumn foliage in the Kanto (Tokyo) Region. You can experience autumn at historic temples, Japanese gardens, and Places of Scenic Beauty.

Rikugien Garden was one of Edo's two famous Japanese gardens.

六義園

Rikugien Garden in Komagome is especially beautiful in autumn with Japanese wax trees and red maples. Along with Koishikawa Korakuen Garden,Rikugien Garden was one of the Two Great Gardens of Edo.From late November to early December,the foliage is illuminated in the evening.See it both in the daytime and evening when it is totally different.

After crossing Togetsukyo Bridge, you will reach the garden's highest area called Fujishiro-toge.

Meiji Jingu Gaien Park's gingko trees turn golden yellow.

明治神宮外苑

The rows of gingko trees are about 300 meters long, turning golden yellow in autumn. Every year from mid-November to early December, the Jingu Gaien Gingko Festival is held, attracting throngs of people. These gingko trees are also famous for appearing in many movies and TV dramas. Well worth a visit.

The best view of the gingko trees is from the Aoyama-dori road intersection. Since the taller trees are closer to you, the scene's perspective is exaggerated as you see the trees and Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery on the far end.

Directions: Get off Kazusa-Nakano Station or Yoro-keikoku Station on the Kominato Line, then take the Kominato Bus bound for Awamata and get off at Awamata-no-Taki.

湯ノ湖の湖岸

Nikko's sacred mountains have attracted many worshippers since time immemorial. In 1999, Nikko became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as Shrines and Temples of Nikko. Nikko is also one of Japan's most famous Places of Scenic Beauty and displays unique autumn scenery. At Lake Yunoko, a panoramic splendor of autumn colors is reflected on the water.

In 2013, Mt. Fuji was registered as the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Object of Worship, Wellspring of Art. At Fuji-Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi), behold the grand scenery of Mt. Fuji and autumn foliage over the lake. The annual Fuji-Kawaguchiko Autumn Foliage Festival's highlights are the Autumn Foliage Tunnel and the evening illumination of the Maple Corridor.
