“Satoyama” is a word which is used to describe the border zone between the wild nature and inhabited land. This area contains rice fields, paddy fields and surrounding community forests and woods.

Although the maintained nature can be seen all over the world, the landscape of “Satoyama” which is consisted of rice field, stream of river, and widespread benevolent forest is somehow special and inspirational to Japanese people. “Satoyama” is a spiritual home of Japanese people and also considered as the unspoilt landscape.

Many Japanese people who were grown up in the city see “Satoyama” as the soothing place and there are tours for hiking in “Satoyama” in the local areas.

“Satoyama” is facing the crisis of devastation because there are fewer and fewer people who work for agriculture and forestry.
