“Ekiben” is a take-away meal box sold on railway station or train. Generally it is purchased and eaten inside the train.

“Ekiben” is ideal for being tasted for long journey in trains - for example, people eat it as they glance at the landscape through the window or as they drink a beer in Shinkansen on the way back from the business trip.

“Ekiben” often uses the regional specialities and there are many famous local productions such as “Ika-meshi” (Squid rice) from Mori staion in Hokkaido, and “Masuno-sushi”(Trout sushi) from Toyama station in Toyama prefecture.

Typical image of “Ekiben” is that people can enjoy the taste of local specialities in visited places but there are more opportunities to eat regional “Ekiben” without travelling. For example, department stores hold the event where they sell regional “Ekiben” and there is a store selling famous “Ekiben” from different regions inside Tokyo station.
